Dr. Fernando Amato (CRM 133826) explains the difference between mammoplasty and mastopexy. The former, as the name suggests, is breast plastic surgery that basically consists of two procedures: breast augmentation mammoplasty and breast reduction mammoplasty.
Mastopexy is related to areola repositioning and is indicated more for breasts with ptosis, meaning sagging, or also with laxity and excess skin.

Hello, my name is Dr. Fernando Amato and today we will talk about mammoplasty and mastopexy.
Do you know the difference between these two surgeries? Mammoplasty, as the name itself implies, is breast plastic surgery. It fundamentally involves two procedures: augmentation mammoplasty, which is commonly performed with the placement of a silicone implant, a procedure popularly known as breast implant, and reduction mammoplasty, for reducing breast volume. Mastopexy, on the other hand, is a name of Greek origin, where “masto” means breast and “pexy” means fixation, and this name is related to the repositioning of the areolas and is indicated more for breasts with ptosis, or sagging breasts, often also with laxity and excess skin. It can be associated with implant placement, and in that case, it will be called mastopexy with an implant.
Although all are breast surgeries, each has its own characteristics and details in the postoperative evolution, and the scars can vary greatly depending on the technique used. The most common incision for breast implants is in the inframammary fold, but it can also be periareolar and axillary. In addition to being able to remove a little excess periareolar skin, the most common is to perform skin removal and areola repositioning, creating an inverted T scar. The inverted T is the most common scar and is also used in large breast reductions.
