Internal Bra: An Innovative Technique for Mammoplasty and Mastopexy
The internal bra, a technique used in mammoplasty and mastopexy, provides support and stability to the breast and silicone implant.
Dr. Fernando Amato, a plastic surgeon at Instituto Amato, explains that the objective of the internal bra is to keep the prosthesis more static and secure, so that the patient can, in some cases, avoid wearing an external bra.
Various techniques can provide this support.
Placing the implant behind the muscle: This technique keeps the implant in a static position, but may not be the best solution if the patient has a lot of mammary tissue. In such cases, it is possible to resect part of the mammary gland and place the implant behind the muscle, which results in a firmer breast that does not require the use of a bra.
An additional technique is the use of sutures in the mammary fold and on the side of the breast to prevent implant movement.
Use of meshes: Biological or synthetic meshes, absorbable or non-absorbable, can secure the breast implant, functioning as an internal bra.
Muscle as support: The muscle can be used to create an inferolateral sling that acts as support for the implant.
Implants with fixations: Some implants attach loops to the chest to keep them stable.
The need to wear a bra after surgery is very individual and depends on each patient and the type of implant used. Textured implants, implants with macro-texture, or polyurethane implants may adhere better to tissues and thus provide more firmness and a lower risk of movement.
Increasing breast size implies greater weight and risk of sagging. The use of a bra in the postoperative period depends on the specifics of each patient, surgery, and recovery.
In summary, the internal bra is a technique used to provide support and stability to the breast and silicone implant in mammoplasty and mastopexy. There are various techniques adaptable to each patient's needs. The decision to wear a bra after surgery will depend on individual factors.
