Mammoplasty and Mastopexy
Dr. Fernando Amato (CRM 133826), a plastic surgeon, explains the difference between mammoplasty and mastopexy in this 2017 video. The first of these, as the name suggests, is breast plastic surgery, which essentially consists of two procedures: augmentation mammoplasty and reduction mammoplasty. Mastopexy is related to the repositioning of the areolas and is more indicated for breasts with ptosis, that is, sagging, or also with laxity and excess skin. Do you know the difference between these two surgeries? Mammoplasty, as the name suggests, is plastic surgery of the breast. It basically involves two procedures: augmentation mammoplasty, which is commonly performed with the placement of a silicone implant, a procedure popularly known as breast implant, and reduction mammoplasty, for reducing the volume of the breasts. Mastopexy, on the other hand, is a name of Greek origin, where masto means breast and pexy means fixation, and this name is related to the repositioning of the areolas and is more indicated for breasts with ptosis, that is, sagging, often also with laxity and excess skin. It can be associated with the placement of an implant, and in that case, it will be called mastopexy with implant. Although all are breast surgeries, each has its own characteristics and details in the postoperative evolution, and the scars can vary greatly depending on the technique used. The most common for breast implants is the incision in the inframammary fold, but periareolar and axillary approaches can also be performed. In addition to being able to remove some periareolar skin excess, it is most common to perform skin removal and repositioning of the areola, creating an inverted T scar. The inverted T is the most common scar and is also used in large breast reductions. If you liked the video, follow our social media and don't miss the upcoming videos. Thank you.
