Projeto Mama Minha: breast reconstruction through SUS in the media

By Law nº 9.797/1999, every woman who undergoes a mastectomy due to cancer has the right to free breast reconstruction through SUS. Still, thousands of patients wait in line for years. Projeto Mama Minha, in which Dr. Fernando Amato participates, gained coverage on Band, TV Cultura, CBN, Folha and other media outlets in 2025.

What is the project

An initiative that unites volunteer plastic surgeons, mastologists, and philanthropic hospitals to offer free breast reconstruction to women who cannot get timely care through SUS.

Why reconstruction matters

• Restores self-esteem and body image;
• Reduces post-mastectomy depression;
• Does not interfere with oncological follow-up;
• Can be immediate (same surgery) or delayed.

Available techniques

Expander + implant, abdominal flaps (TRAM, DIEP), dorsal flap (latissimus dorsi), or symmetrization of the contralateral breast.
