This is the genetic test for the research of mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, which indicate a higher risk for the development of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Generally, the tests are indicated for women who have cases of these types of disease in their family.

You may remember the episode involving American actress Angelina Jolie: after being diagnosed with this genetic alteration, showing an increased risk of developing cancer, she opted for total mastectomy (removal of the breasts).

Despite the fact widely publicized by the press and which surprised many, it is important to make it clear that mastectomy is not always indicated, even if the test is positive. But on this topic, I will explain more in my next post.

➡The most important thing is for the patient to have a sincere conversation with the doctor, expressing all her fears and expectations. A good doctor-patient relationship, from the very first moment, is fundamental for the best choices, trying to avoid any precipitous action that could lead to regret later.
