ASIA Syndrome (Autoimmune/Inflammatory Syndrome Induced by Adjuvants), also known as Shoenfeld's Syndrome, has gained increasing attention in the Brazilian press since 2020. Dr. Fernando Amato was consulted by several media outlets to clarify the autoimmune condition that may be associated with silicone implants and when breast explantation becomes indicated.
What is ASIA Syndrome
A rare autoimmune inflammatory condition triggered by adjuvants — foreign materials to the body, among them silicone. Symptoms are often nonspecific: hair loss, chronic fatigue, joint pain, cognitive changes, dry eyes and mouth, irritability, and depression.
When Explantation is the Treatment
Medications can control some of the symptoms, but implant removal is the definitive treatment in confirmed cases. The decision is individualized, ideally in conjunction with a rheumatologist and immunologist.
