Over time, capsular contracture, which is the hardening of the prosthesis material, can occur. This effect can happen 10 to 20 years after the surgery. Watch the video for more details with Dr. Fernando Amato (CRM 133826). --transcript--- The technology used in breast implants is increasingly advanced. But despite this, implants are not eternal. They need to be replaced at some point in life. Any foreign material placed in the body will cause a reaction in the body. So, in the case of breast prostheses, breast implants, the body forms a capsule around them to protect itself from the implant. This capsule, over time, can begin to become thick and hardened. And, over time, the patient may feel pain, and these hardenings can even cause visible deformities in the breast. This is what we call capsular contracture. This is one of the main reasons for breast implant replacement. Capsular contracture occurs, on average, 10 to 20 years after surgery. But it can happen earlier, at 3 years, 4 years. Prosthesis replacement due to capsular contracture is not the only reason. Patients have been getting breast implants very early. And they end up gaining weight, losing weight and breastfeeding, and over time they end up having breast ptosis, a breast sag and skin excess. One of the reasons for replacing the prosthesis is also a repositioning and an improvement in appearance after this weight gain/loss and breastfeeding. The most important thing is to be in follow-up with your doctor to make sure everything is okay with the prosthesis, if there has been no rupture, if there is no hardened capsule, and with him, plan when to replace it or if only to monitor. Okay? If you have breast implants and have any questions, be sure to seek out your doctor. Thank you.
