High-Intensity, Short-Duration Exercises: A New Approach to Cancer Prevention

Staying active and reducing sedentary periods are key steps in preventing cancer, especially breast cancer. Many, however, face obstacles when trying to integrate continuous exercise into their routine. The encouraging prospect is that high-intensity activities, even if short-duration, can be a valuable alternative in the fight against this disease.
For those who have difficulty (or lack enthusiasm) in maintaining an exercise routine, small actions like quickly climbing stairs or walking rapidly for short periods daily can make a difference. These findings come from research published in July 2023 in the JAMA Oncology journal.
Exercise and its Relationship with Cancer Prevention
There is a consolidated understanding, supported by long-standing studies, that regular physical activity provides an overall improvement in well-being. Significantly, it decreases susceptibility to cancer.
The specific reasons are still debated, but some hypotheses include the role of exercise in regulating hormones and maintaining weight balance. With this in mind, the World Health Organization (WHO) advises adults to engage in 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity per week.
Thus, given individual difficulties in achieving these goals, scientists in the United Kingdom set out to investigate whether small intervals of intense exercise, incorporated into daily routines, would bring similar benefits. Everyday actions, such as running to an appointment or quickly climbing stairs, were the main focus.
The Positive Impact of Quick and Intense Exercises
The study, which involved more than 22,000 participants with an average age of 62, revealed that most high-intensity activities practiced lasted less than two minutes. However, even these brief moments of activity proved effective in prevention.
Over seven years of observation, it became clear that performing 3.4 to 3.6 minutes of intense exercise daily led to a 17% to 18% drop in the propensity to develop cancer.
Incorporating Physical Activity into Your Daily Life
The study's results suggest that the more active you are, the greater the benefits. Just four minutes of intense activity daily can reduce cancer risk by 20%. For types of cancer linked to a sedentary lifestyle, this reduction was even more pronounced, reaching 30%.
Therefore, considering small changes in routine can bring great benefits. Swapping the elevator for stairs, opting for longer walks, or using a bicycle for routine commutes are simple ways to incorporate more movement into your day. If motivation is a challenge, finding activities that spark interest or joining friends in sports can be the necessary impulse. The essential thing is to start, and every small effort counts in this prevention journey.
