The Growing Demand for Breast Explantation: A Trend in Plastic Surgery Practices
Introduction:
The growing demand for breast explantation has been increasingly prominent in plastic surgery practices, as recent data reveal a significant increase in the search for this intervention. In this article, we will analyze the increase in the frequency of breast explantation and the possible reasons behind this trend.
Breast augmentation vs. breast explantation:
According to the 2021 report from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), breast augmentation with implants is the second most performed plastic surgery worldwide and the most performed among women. However, breast explantation, which involves the removal of implants, has been growing in popularity.
Increase in the frequency of breast explantations:
According to the same ISAPS report, breast explantation currently ranks 16th among the most performed plastic surgeries, accounting for 2% of the total. Comparing these data with previous reports, a significant increase in the demand for breast explantations can be observed. Compared to 2020, there was an increase of 22.6%, and compared to 2017, the increase was 49.6%. In the 2020 report, the increase had already been 33% compared to 2016.
In the United States, the increase in demand for breast explantations was even more pronounced. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there was a 39% increase between 2000 and 2020.
Data from Dr. Fernando Amato's practice:
At Dr. Fernando Amato's practice, the trend of increasing demand for breast explantations is also confirmed. In the last two years, the use of implants in breast surgeries was around 50 to 60%, while explantation accounted for 15 to 25% of cases. Initial surgeries without implants represented about 25% of interventions.
Conclusion:
The increased frequency of breast explantation in plastic surgery practices is a growing trend. This shift can be attributed to various factors, such as increased awareness of the risks and complications associated with breast implants, changes in aesthetic preferences, and the search for more natural alternatives. Over time, it is likely that the demand for breast explantations will continue to grow, reflecting changes in patients' values and priorities.
