⠀
After a mastectomy (breast removal), one of the options for breast reconstruction is with the use of a breast expander, which can be placed during the mastectomy and, after the surgery, is gradually filled with saline solution in the clinic or outpatient setting.
⠀
The objective is to prepare and stretch the tissues for its exchange for a silicone implant. This is a simple, safe technique with excellent results, but it requires many follow-up visits to the clinic. The filling of the expander begins after the healing of the breast, around 3 weeks, with intervals of one to two weeks. The expanded volume is determined by the expander's capacity, the quality of the tissues, and the patient's tolerance.
⠀
Five or more sessions may be necessary for satisfactory expansion.
⠀
Generally, a session lasts about 45 minutes. The result of breast reconstruction brings many benefits to the patient, significantly improving her self-esteem, self-confidence, and quality of life.????
