Lipedema Treatment: Conservative, Clinical, or Surgical Treatment?

The treatment of lipedema is a challenge that involves several strategies, ranging from basic care to surgical interventions. In the last 10 to 12 years, research on lipedema has advanced significantly, although more study is still needed to define the most effective approach. Thus, at Instituto Amato, known for its deep expertise in lipedema, we adopt a comprehensive and detailed approach to treating this condition. Therefore, this text explores the various available treatments and shares our perspective on the best way to address lipedema.

Conservative Treatment

Conservative strategies are the starting point in lipedema treatment, focusing on education and lifestyle improvement, without resorting to medication or surgery. This includes:

  • Education about lipedema, crucial for understanding and managing the condition.
  • Adoption of a healthy lifestyle, based on the six pillars of lifestyle medicine: balanced nutrition, regular exercise, quality sleep, stress management, maintaining good relationships, and avoiding harmful substances.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight with balanced diets, to minimize symptoms.
  • Adapted physical exercises, such as swimming and walking, which improve circulation without overloading affected areas.
  • Use of compression garments to relieve swelling and pain.
  • Physiotherapy and lymphatic drainage to reduce pain and swelling.
  • Skin care, maintaining its health and integrity.

Clinical Treatment

Then, it involves the use of medications to alleviate symptoms such as pain and inflammation, as well as vitamins, supplements, and substances with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, weight control can also be assisted by specific medications.

Surgical Treatment

Liposuction is considered when other approaches are not sufficient, aiming to reduce the volume of fat to relieve pain and improve mobility and quality of life.

Instituto Amato's Perspective

We emphasize the need for a thorough evaluation before opting for surgery. Thus, lipedema symptoms may indicate other conditions that need to be identified and treated. However, surgery without fully understanding the underlying causes can lead to negative outcomes, such as lipedema recurrence.

Conclusion

Treating lipedema requires a personalized approach that considers both symptoms and underlying causes. Furthermore, at Instituto Amato, we prioritize a careful and integrated vision, focusing on the patient's general well-being. Therefore, seeking treatment should be guided by specialized professionals dedicated to providing the best possible care and deeply understanding lipedema.
