ASIA Syndrome and Silicone Illness
Mammoplasty and mastopexy with silicone implants are surgeries that are still at the top of the list among the most performed plastic surgeries in Brazil: there are about 200,000 per year.
But as we saw in the previous post, silicone explantation has shown growth, and some reasons may be:
Women valuing their natural shapes more and better accepting their bodies.
Silicone Illness – Complications related to the presence of a silicone implant, which in rare cases can involve silicone leakage without implant rupture.
ASIA Syndrome – the silicone implant acts as a trigger to develop symptoms similar to those of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases such as body joint pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, hair loss, dry eyes, and mouth.
Both silicone illness and ASIA syndrome are rare conditions, but they are increasingly being reported.
A study conducted in 2020 by the International Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery showed that Brazil registered 25,000 silicone implant removal procedures (explantations).
Silicone illness and ASIA Syndrome may be related to this increase.
In the image above we see 2 silicone breast implants surrounded by a capsule. This capsule is hardened and folding the implant internally.
