ASIA Syndrome and Silicone Disease

Mammoplasty and mastopexy with silicone implants are still among the most performed plastic surgeries in Brazil: around 200,000 per year.

But as we saw in the previous post, silicone explant has shown growth, and some reasons may be:

Women valuing their natural shapes more and accepting their bodies better.

Silicone Disease – Complications related to the presence of a silicone implant, in rare cases including silicone leakage without implant rupture.

ASIA Syndrome – where the silicone implant acts as a trigger to develop symptoms similar to autoimmune and inflammatory diseases such as body joint pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, hair loss, dry eyes and mouth.

Both Silicone Disease and ASIA syndrome are rare conditions, but they are increasingly being reported.

A study conducted in 2020 by the International Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery showed that Brazil recorded 25,000 silicone implant removal procedures (explant).

Silicone disease and ASIA Syndrome may be related to this increase.

In the image above, we see 2 silicone breast implants surrounded by a capsule. This capsule is hardened, causing the implant to fold internally.
