Learn when breast reconstruction may be indicated

The highest incidence of cancer in women remains breast cancer, with approximately 66,200 new cases in 2020, representing 29.7% of all cancers listed in Brazil, according to data from the National Cancer Institute (INCA).

The performance of reconstructive plastic surgery, with or without the use of an implanted medical device (breast silicone implant), has become guaranteed for all individuals thanks to Bill 9657/18, approved by the Social Security and Family Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, which amends Laws No. 8.080, of September 19, 1990, and No. 9.656, of June 3, 1998, expanding existing laws to cases of reconstructive plastic surgery for all mutilations, reinforcing health plan coverage for the surgery, according to the approved bill.

And this applies regardless of the type of mutilation or deformity, and even for the use of implantable materials, such as silicone breast implants, as well as other materials for other body areas. Preferably performed at the same time as the mutilating or deforming surgery.

When breast reconstruction is indicated – It is necessary to analyze the proposed oncological treatment, since breast reconstruction with silicone implants cannot always be performed immediately, especially in cases where a lot of skin is removed or when complementary treatment with radiotherapy precedes it.

Depending on the staging of the disease (determined by the size of the lesion, location, lymph node involvement, and presence of metastasis), mastectomy (breast removal) may be indicated, and it is at this moment that breast reconstruction can make a difference in restoring self-esteem and female confidence, contributing even to strengthening the battle against the disease.

Unlike aesthetic surgery, a reconstructed breast has distinct characteristics. The specialist says that often the nipples need to be recreated. The reconstructed breast will not have the same appearance as a healthy breast, as it may have scars and be harder. Therefore, I always advise the patient to seek psychological support to overcome this moment.

Mammography is considered an essential examination for the early diagnosis of breast cancer, and can reduce mortality by up to 30% when performed periodically.
