Male breast reduction is among the most sought-after surgeries by men

Gynecomastia is the enlargement of male breasts, which occurs mainly due to an increase in mammary gland tissue, which may or may not be associated with fat accumulation. Diagnosis is clinical, but complementary exams (such as hormone profile and imaging tests) are often necessary to identify the cause of gynecomastia.
The surgical treatment consists of the resection of excess mammary gland tissue, liposuction of fat, and/or resection of excess skin, restoring a sense of well-being and male self-esteem.
Post-gynecomastia surgery care must be taken seriously for the patient to achieve the best possible result. Below, I point out five tips that I consider fundamental during the post-operative period:
- Wear a post-surgical/shaping compression garment as instructed.
- Rest in the first few days, without raising your arms. Avoid physical exertion, but walking is welcome and should be encouraged.
- Drink plenty of water, prefer fruits and vegetables, avoid fatty foods, fried foods, and processed foods.
- Follow medication instructions. Use analgesics, anti-inflammatories, and antibiotics exactly as prescribed by the doctor.
- Do not expose yourself to the sun while there is swelling and ecchymosis (bruising), which can impair healing.
Generally, after gynecomastia surgery, I recommend the use of elastic compression garments to compress and prevent fluid formation initially and then to shape the operated area for the first 30 to 60 days, depending on each case.
The evaluation for returning to physical activities must be individualized and will only be approved after follow-up appointments with the plastic surgeon. Once cleared, exercises should be progressive, starting with low impact and low intensity. For chest, shoulder, and back areas, weight training can usually only be performed after two months from the date of surgery, but it should always be individualized.
Be sure to ask your doctor everything, even the simplest questions. The more information, the better the result.
