How to use a vacuum drain

1 - Wash your hands before and after manipulating the drain

2 - Use procedure gloves to manipulate the drain

3 - Sanitize the drain with 70% alcohol

4 - After bathing, clean the drain insertion site (exit on the skin) with 0.9% physiological saline, occlude with sterile gauze and micropore

5 - Secure the drain extension to the skin with micropore (approximately 04 fingers below the insertion), to prevent fissures (wounds) at the insertion site.

6 - Always keep the drain below the insertion site (exit on the skin).

7 - Keep it protected in a plastic bag and do not place it on the floor.

8 - If the drain is pulled, the fixation point comes loose, or small holes are exposed, causing vacuum loss, return to the hospital or contact your doctor.

9 - Create the drain's vacuum at least once a day or whenever necessary. Following the sequence below:

- First close the clamp

- Open the drain cap and discard the contents into an appropriate container

- With one hand, compress the drain bottle against a firm surface to expel the air and with the other hand, close the cap and open the clamp.

- Repeat as many times as necessary.

- Note the quantity and appearance (color).

- NEVER wash the drain container.

- Wash your hands before and after each procedure

ATTENTION: Observe the surgical site and if there is edema (swelling), discharge, rubor (redness), and warmth in the area, return to the hospital (emergency room) or contact the doctor.
