Liposuction: what defines the cost (and why a low price is a risk)

The 7 factors that define the cost

1. Number and size of areas — chin liposuction costs much less than abdomen + flanks + saddlebags + back.
2. Technique — classic tumescent liposuction, power-assisted liposuction (PAL), HD lipo, LAD lipo (laser), VASER lipo. Each has its own equipment cost and surgical time.
3. Operating room time — hospitals charge by the hour. A 4-hour surgery costs twice as much as a 2-hour one.
4. Hospital level — a level 3 hospital (with ICU, blood bank, 24-hour staff) is more expensive than a day-hospital clinic. Justifiable for larger volumes or patients with increased risk.
5. Medical team — board-certified plastic surgeon (SBCP), dedicated anesthesiologist (not shared), scrub nurse, assistant. A complete team costs more than a "solo" surgeon.
6. Anesthesia — board-certified anesthesiologist (SBA) with integral presence, advanced monitoring. Different from "light sedation" performed by third parties.
7. Included post-operative care — lymphatic drainage, follow-up appointments, compression garment, control ultrasound. Some fees include these, others charge separately.

What's behind very low prices

• Surgeon without SBCP certification — non-plastic surgeon or recently graduated without complete residency.
• Hospital without ICU or without support for complications (embolism, massive bleeding).
• Anesthesiologist shared among several rooms — without integral presence.
• "All-inclusive" packages in clinic operating rooms with limited infrastructure.
• Incomplete pre-operative exams or surgery on patients who should be contraindicated.
• Reused materials or non-standard cannulas/equipment.

The cost of being "cheap" when things go wrong

Revising a poorly performed liposuction costs 2 to 3 times more than a well-done primary surgery — because fibrosis, contour irregularity, and poor fat distribution are much harder to correct than to get right the first time. Treatment of serious complications (embolism, infection, perforation) can cost dozens of times the initial "discount".

Why does the price of liposuction vary so much?

Is cheap liposuction dangerous?

It can be. Prices far below the market usually mean: an uncertified surgeon, a hospital without an ICU, a shared anesthesiologist, reused materials, or the absence of complete pre-operative exams. Liposuction has real risks — fat embolism, perforation, infection — and safety costs money.

Does health insurance cover liposuction?

Aesthetic liposuction is not covered. There are specific situations (lipedema with documented clinical indication, reconstruction after bariatric surgery in selected cases) where partial coverage may be available. Medical evaluation defines what is covered by the plan.
