The Evolution of Surgical Techniques for Breast Cancer: From Mastectomy to Cryoablation

The treatment of breast cancer has undergone a profound evolution in recent decades. From the first surgical interventions to today's minimally invasive treatments, medicine has followed a path of constant learning and improvement. Let's delve into this history and understand how we arrived at current options and what the future may hold.

History of Mastectomy:

Mastectomy, which involves the total removal of the breast, has been a standard approach in breast cancer treatment for many years. Traditionally, doctors viewed it as the only way to completely remove the cancer and prevent its spread. However, the technique, though effective, left visible scars and significantly impacted patients' self-esteem.

With advancing research, medicine realized that not all cases required such a radical approach. Thus, conservative surgical techniques emerged, such as quadrantectomy, where doctors remove only the cancerous tissue and a small margin of healthy tissue, preserving a large part of the breast.

The Future Without Surgery:

The search for less invasive and more specific treatments is a trend in modern oncology for breast cancer treatment without surgery. The combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, for example, has already proven to be capable of reducing tumors, in some cases avoiding extensive surgeries.

Furthermore, there is increasing research into targeted treatments, capable of specifically identifying and attacking cancer cells, sparing healthy tissues. These approaches, besides minimizing side effects, aim to ensure faster recovery and better aesthetic results.

Cryoablation: A Future Promise:

Among recent innovations, cryoablation has stood out. This technique uses cold to destroy cancer cells. Basically, a needle is inserted into the tumor, and through it, refrigerating agents are released that freeze and destroy the malignant cells. The great advantage is that cryoablation is minimally invasive, can be performed under local anesthesia, and does not require prolonged hospitalization.

Preliminary studies have shown promising results, especially for smaller tumors. However, like all innovations, more studies and long-term follow-up are still needed to determine the technique's full effectiveness and precise indication for breast cancer treatment without surgery.

Conclusion:

In summary, breast cancer treatment has, over the years, been marked by significant advances. Medicine not only seeks more effective ways to combat the disease but also methods that ensure the patient's quality of life and self-esteem. Whether through conservative surgeries, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or innovations like cryoablation, the future is certainly promising in the battle against breast cancer. And for patients, this means hope and better recovery prospects.
