Before answering this question, we need to understand what mastitis is. It is an acute inflammation, with or without bacterial infection, most common in the first months after childbirth and related to breastfeeding. It can be influenced by the baby's latch on the nipple and by the amount of milk produced by the mother.

During breastfeeding, mastitis can be caused by milk accumulation in the breasts or by a blocked milk duct, which is the channel through which milk passes. This happens when milk cannot exit the breasts and backs up, causing inflammation. But it can also occur when bacteria from the woman's skin and the newborn's mouth penetrate the milk ducts and, upon coming into contact with accumulated milk in the breasts, proliferate and cause the inflammatory process.

So, those with silicone implants can get mastitis, but it is not induced by the implant.

The main symptoms of mastitis are intense pain, swollen and reddened breast, fever above 38ºC, chills, and general malaise. The diagnosis can be confirmed by a doctor through symptom evaluation, and it is crucial that treatment is started as soon as possible so that the condition does not progress to a breast abscess, which may even require surgical drainage.

❗❗❗Important: even when the diagnosis is confirmed, continue breastfeeding, as the milk is not contaminated and will not harm the baby. And another benefit: breastfeeding helps drain accumulated milk, improving symptoms. If in doubt, always talk to your doctor and plastic surgeon. 😉
