Breast Reconstruction after Mastectomy: Understand the Process and Rights

A cancer diagnosis can be one of the most challenging moments in a woman's life, and when cancer affects the breast, leading to the need for a mastectomy, the situation can have an even deeper impact on female self-esteem.

What is Breast Reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction is a procedure that aims to restore the shape, appearance, and size of the breast after mastectomy. The decision to reconstruct, as well as the technique to be adopted, depends on several factors, including the oncological treatment indicated and possible clinical contraindications. It is not always feasible to perform reconstruction immediately, especially if there has been extensive skin removal or subsequent radiotherapy treatment.

In situations where a large amount of skin is removed, a breast expander may be necessary. This device, similar to a silicone bladder, is inserted under the pectoral muscle during the mastectomy. After healing, the expander is gradually filled with saline solution in outpatient appointments until it reaches the appropriate volume. This method facilitates skin expansion, preparing it for the future insertion of the silicone implant.

Expectations for Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction after mastectomy yields distinct results from common aesthetic procedures. The reconstructed breast may have differences in appearance, scars, and consistency. In some cases, nipples may need to be reconstructed. Despite the differences, many patients are satisfied with the results, given that they face a health condition that can be mutilating.

A psychological approach is fundamental for the patient to understand the situation and align her expectations. Companions in consultations are encouraged to assist in understanding the techniques and procedures.

Your Rights in Breast Reconstruction

In Brazil, every woman has the right to breast reconstruction through the Unified Health System (SUS) and also through private health plans. This includes procedures on the opposite breast for symmetry. However, each reconstruction must be personalized, taking into account the patient's wishes and clinical conditions.

Open communication with your doctor is vital. Knowing all available alternatives and placing trust in the professional is essential. Finally, regular mammography is crucial for early detection of breast cancer, significantly reducing the risk of mortality. Inform yourself, take care of yourself, and know your rights.
